Nigella Lawson is currently living out a nightmare under the harsh glare and scrutiny of the media. What is actually an alleged fraud case involving Nigella’s former assistants has become hugely focused on indiscretions in her private life after Nigella admitted to having taken cocaine but denied being a habitual drug user.
Through what must be an extremely difficult and humiliating time, it should be of some comfort for Nigella to learn that ‘Team Cupcake’ (Nigella’s supporters and her trusted inner circle) are defending her so wholeheartedly. Nigella’s former personal assistant Renee Guazzo recently spoke out about her time working closely with Nigella, calling her ‘…a beautiful woman, a devoted mother and a caring and genuine person.’
Indeed Team Cupcake is growing in force with a recent YouGov poll for the Sunday Times finding that 39% of the British public have sympathy for Nigella while only 2% are firmly on her ex-husband Charles Saatchi’s side.
During the court case Team Saatchi and Team Cupcake have had very different styles of approach; Nigella arrived in court last week flanked by her publicist, her PR advisor, her lawyer and her brother Dominic Lawson while Saatchi went to court without legal or emotional support and no visible PR representation.
Who knows what next steps Nigella will take with her career and personal life once this is all over. She has after all admitted to taking Class A drugs and this can’t have helped her image on either side of the Atlantic where she has built a stellar reputation based on clean living, healthy eating and of course the wobble of the upper inner thigh! However she isn’t the first celeb to admit to wrongdoing or to a ‘poor error of judgement’ as they are frequently referred to and indeed others before her like Kate Moss have bounced back spectacularly from similar admissions.
But one thing is certain; we are watching a masterclass in dignity as Nigella holds her beautifully groomed head high. You could say we are witnessing a PR coup!
