Pembroke Commmunications very own TV critic Nicholas Murphy lets us know what we should be watching
It must be noted how time has such a heavy influence on our lives.
1 o’clock is lunchtime!! Monday is the day that comes too soon, and even months have an effect on our mood and habits.
December is obviously the festive season, which rolls us into January blues, the guilty month: we try to go to the gym and not spend any money (fortunately for many of us spending money isn’t actually an option!). But what does February have in store for us? There’s less guilt to be fit and frugal but we still need to relax and count our pennies as we begin to anticipate the spring and summer ahead of us. Thus, our only true option is to sit back and relax in front of the telly!
But that’s the interesting thing about our February telly TV viewing. It doesn’t even have to be in front of a telly TV anymore.
It can be a portable mini telly: a laptop, a tablet or a smartphone. We can view our favourite shows on the way to work now, when we’re out for lunch, and propped on our tummy as we fall asleep. The new video on demand market offers endless options for viewers.
NEWBIE
If you’re new to Netflix, then you need to check out two of the best new shows of last year House of Cards and Orange is the New Black, Both shows are Netflix originals and what I love about them is you don’t have to wait a week for a new episode as all episodes are put up together.
House of Cards explores the manipulative genius Congressman Frank Underwood, (played by Kevin Spacey), in his ruthless plan to destroy those who have betrayed him in the past, including the President of the United States.
In Orange is the New Black, Taylor Schilling plays Piper Chapman, a well-to-do married woman, sentenced to an all female prison for a crime she committed in her secret, shady past. Both shows are fan favourites on Netflix.

Breaking Bad: TG4 (Final season, Wednesday 21:30)
All five seasons of Breaking Bad were received to critical acclaim. For those of you who have been hiding under a rock, Breaking Bad follows Walter White, a terminally ill cancer patient as he turns to a life of drug dealing to help secure his family’s future after he’s dead. TG4 is currently playing its final season, every Wednesday night at 21:30 but you can catch up on any episodes you’ve missed up to seven days after on TG4 Player.
Borgen: TG4 (Thursday 23:00).
The cult hit political drama Borgen, can also be found on TG4, every Thursday at 22:00. Originally set and televised in Denmark, critics and audiences across the US and UK have lauded the show as tense and exciting. Newsweek in the US hails it as “the best TV show you’ll ever see”, high praise but not misplaced.
True Detective:
Another new HBO show coming from America is True Detective. It follows Matthew McConaughey and Woody Harrelson, as two homicide detectives on the hunt for a serial killer across Louisiana. The exciting crime thriller will be shown on Sky Atlantic this February and already five episodes in it was the media world raving about its dark storyline and amazing performances throughout. A six minute one-shot action scene in the fourth episode lit up social media channels, not to be missed!
